AI in branding: what it can and can't do for your brand

AI now handles much of the making in branding: logos, palettes, layouts and first drafts of copy. The thinking (who the brand is for, what it stands for, what it should never say) is still a human job. This guide shows where the line sits and how to use AI on the parts it is good at.

What does AI do in branding?

In branding, AI generates and checks. It generates logo options, color palettes, layouts, images and first drafts of copy from a short brief, and it checks finished work against the brand's rules. It does not decide what the brand should mean: positioning, audience and tone still come from the people who run the business.

That split matters because most branding work is repetition. Once a business knows who it is, the same logo, colors, fonts and voice have to appear correctly on every post, flyer, invoice and slide, every week, often made by different people. AI is well suited to that repetitive making and checking. It is poorly suited to the few decisions that set the direction.

Where AI helps: task by task

The table below lists the branding jobs AI can take on today and where each one lives in Brand AI. Each tool links to its page.

What still needs a person

Some branding work depends on knowledge that only the business has, or on judgment that someone has to answer for. Keep these with people:

If a project needs a lot of the work on this list, such as a full rebrand of a large company or naming a new business, see AI tools vs a branding agency.

How to use AI for branding, step by step

  1. Write down the basics first. One sentence on who the brand serves, three words for how it should feel, and a short list of words to avoid. This is the brief every AI tool will work from.
  2. Create the identity. Enter the business name and a style in Brand Creator and choose from the logo options. Already have a logo? Upload it instead. Logos come as SVG, PNG, EPS and PDF, with color, black-and-white and transparent versions.
  3. Save it as a Brand Kit. Put the logo, palette and fonts in the Brand Kit, so every template and export uses them without anyone retyping a color code.
  4. Make the everyday designs from templates. Pick formats from the template library: social posts and stories, flyers, business cards, invitations, presentations. The Brand Kit applies itself. Templates for specific professions are in the industry playbooks and brand kits.
  5. Draft copy with your brief attached. Use a prompt from Brand AI Insights and paste in the basics from step 1, so the draft starts in your voice instead of a generic one. Edit before publishing.
  6. Check, then check again later. Run the consistency checker on a batch of finished work, and look at Brand 360 every month to see whether the brand is drifting.

Brand AI has a free plan, and no credit card is needed to sign up. Paid plans cost $11.99 a month or $117 a year.

Why consistency is where AI pays off

The Lucidpress State of Brand Consistency Report (December 2019, a survey of more than 200 organizations) found that consistent branding can increase revenue by up to 33%, and that 81% of companies still deal with off-brand content. Off-brand content rarely comes from a bad logo. It comes from the hundredth flyer made in a hurry with the wrong font.

That is the job AI does best: making the hundredth design match the first one, and noticing when it doesn't. A small team gets the consistency that used to need a brand manager checking every file.

Examples made from Brand AI templates

Each of these is a real, editable template from the Brand AI library. Open one to change the words and images, and the Brand Kit swaps in your logo and colors.

Questions people ask

Is there an AI for branding?

Yes. AI branding platforms such as Brand AI generate a logo and brand identity from a business name and style, keep the logo, colors and fonts in a Brand Kit, apply them to templates, and check designs for consistency. They cover the making and checking; deciding what the brand stands for is still up to the business.

How is AI used in branding?

AI is used to generate logo options and color palettes, create images from text prompts, draft social posts and ad copy from a brief, apply a brand kit to templates automatically, and score how consistent a brand is across channels. It speeds up repetitive work and catches drift, while people set the strategy and approve what is published.

Can AI create a whole brand identity?

AI can create the visible parts of an identity: logo options, a color palette, fonts, business cards, social covers and branded templates. In Brand AI, Brand Creator produces these together from a name and a style. The strategy behind the identity, such as who it is for and what it promises, should come from the business.

Will AI replace brand designers?

AI replaces much of the routine production, such as resizing, re-coloring and laying out everyday designs. Designers and strategists remain valuable for positioning, naming, research and distinctive creative work. Many teams use AI tools for day-to-day output and bring in a designer or agency for the big decisions.

Can I use AI-generated logos and designs commercially?

Logos and designs made in Brand AI can be used commercially, on products, packaging, signage, websites, social media and advertising. Whether a logo can be registered as a trademark is decided by the trademark office in each country, so check with that office or a trademark lawyer before filing.

Is AI branding free?

Brand AI has a free plan with no credit card needed, and its template library and more than 200 branding and marketing tools can be used for free. Paid plans cost $11.99 a month or $117 a year and add premium designs and features.
